Elizabeth's Spa in Karlovy Vary is the only place where today we can indulge in healing treatments as in the days of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, including all the modern procedures that were introduced during the 20th century.
Of the original six spa houses, they remained in Karlovy Vary as the only and last central city spa. The history goes back to 1906, the golden era of the spa industry, when during the spa season local hotels were fully occupied and clients came to the central spa houses. At that time, procedures were provided in all AL premises, it is said that up to 2500 per day - baths, wraps, massages and hydrotherapy. Furthermore, a swimming pool complex with a swimming pool and saunas was built into the yard in the 1970s.
Especially in this exceptional time, in the tightening veil of the viral pandemic, which is changing the course of society, affecting people's lives and crushing much that we are used to, the spa is like an oasis in the desert, a lifeboat on a stormy sea. Here, the power of healing natural resources, the skill of exceptional professionals and the centuries-old tradition of Karlovy Vary spas are used to maintain vitality, energy, and mobility, as well as to restore them after serious illnesses, injuries, fatigue and stress.
The city of Karlovy Vary is one of the most affected cities in the framework of the virus crisis in the Czech Republic, and yet it maintains and brings to people its greatest treasure – spa care in the form of a public service in Alžbětiny Lázně. It can be understood as a gift of health, energy, strengthening of the immune system, but also rest, psychological well-being and respite from fear and restlessness. At a time when there is talk of cuts, tightening of belts, disruption of this or that with traffic, by not closing Elizabeth's spa and by supporting it, the city makes it clear that people and their health are and always will be in the first place. After all, Elizabeth's spa has been running like a living organism without a single delay since 1906.
No major repairs have been made to the building in the past decades, so the resulting sad sight of the decaying spa is a direct result of this. Nevertheless, it was possible to achieve at least a partial modification of the interiors, the creation of new procedures (for example, a salt cave was built here, a procedure for intestinal lavages was built here in 2006, whole-body cryotherapy started working as the first in Karlovy Vary, bath cabins were repaired, etc.)
Under the leadership of the board of directors since January 2019, headed by engineer Václav Benedikt, better times are finally dawning... what seemed absolutely impossible and in the stage of dreams and wishes is slowly but surely starting to come true. It was achieved that the City of Karlovy Vary undertook not to sell AL, to maintain the operation of AL, and the Board of Directors is taking concrete steps to fulfill this goal. The SISSI cabins with a romantic hot spring bath for two are being repaired, the general repair of the elevator is underway, the documents necessary for the projects for roof repair, window replacement, corridor repair, self-service hot spring bath, expansion of traditional procedures, accompanying services for well-being and a pleasant stay in the spa are ready. as soon as possible etc...
Together, we will hope that with the help of the favor of local citizens, the help of the City of Karlovy Vary and the constant intensive work of the employees and the board of directors, Alžbětiny Lázně, as will have great hope of surviving these days and months and will continue and prosper in the coming years. According to Ing. Václav Benedikt, Chairman of the Board of Alžbětiny Lázně as "It is essential for everyone involved to choose the right one between the simple and the right way. The past is immutable, the present is accompanied by our unceasing zeal, we are creating the future right now. So let there be something to look at".
